Your 1-Word : Less is More

Jessica Nguyen May 28, 2026

We process, on average, 35,000 decisions daily. There’s a lot going on out there – and in your mind!

Information overload is at its maximum capacity.

In an era where AI can spew thousands of words in seconds, we now, more than ever, need to evaluate the importance of words. This is not meant to downplay their significance, rather, celebrate their impact.

Words are a result of a collective and evolutionary process involving all of humanity. Words didn’t appear overnight; they were developed slowly over thousands of years as our ancestors acquired the cognitive capabilities needed for intricate communication.

Our ultimate goal as communicators is to deliver understanding, regardless of what the nuance of the message is.

So how does one attain understanding?

By making the complex easy, and the boring interesting!  Yes, that can be a way.

The question is – are we choosing our words wisely?

Leaders and brands drown audiences in too many words. But in a noisy world, clarity beats complexity any day of the week.

Great communicators are remembered for one word, one idea, one essence.

  • Nike = Just Do It  (action)
  • Apple = Think Different  (innovation)
  • Coca Cola = Open Happiness  (pleasure)
  • They all own a “1-Word” that makes them unmistakable.

Make this 1-Word your Compass

A compass reminds us of where we are headed. It doesn’t point the same way for everyone—because it aligns with your own true north, not someone else’s map. Where you are in your life—emotionally, personally, professionally—shifts your direction. What once felt like north may now be south.

What if that direction had 1 word labeled beside it?

It is representative of where you are heading?  Did your last meeting point in that direction? Does your pitch deck align with it?

Your direction evolves because you evolve. So does your 1-word.

This exercise is profound for professionals, students, boards, and corporations alike.

Ford was revolutionized by ~ W. Edwards Deming, the world’s authority on Quality Control Management. He was responsible for reviving the Ford Motor Company in the 1980s.

If you can’t describe what you are doing as a process, you don’t know what you’re doing.

This may sound harsh to some of us but rings true for anyone who understands the importance of QC.

In the same way, if you cannot say synthesize your message into a word (or so) then you are likely saying too much.

People take action on what they understand. A confused mind never buys.

Think about an upcoming message that needs to be delivered with impact (email, presentation, conversation, meet & greet …)

  • If you could only describe it in 1 word, what would it be?

This helps redirect focus to what matters most, and helps audiences retain the essence of your message.

Now think about how you show up in public (at work, family reunions, with friends, networking events …)

  • If you could only describe yourself in 1 word, what would it be?

Owning your 1-Word identity makes you memorable, trusted, and clear.

Your 1-Word becomes your filter for decisions, communication, and direction.

Communication isn’t about saying more. It’s about saying what matters.

Your 1-Word is your biggest brand asset. Own it. Use it. Live it.
